The Art of Lucid Dreaming

26 09 2007

Ever wondered what it would be like to fly; to be able to just jump up in the air, and take off, effortlessly gliding around buildings, and up in to the blue skies above?

Ever wondered what it would be like to walk through walls, or go back in time?

Strangely enough, all this is possible through the bizarre art of lucid dreaming.

Lucid dreaming is the art of becoming conscious of the fact you’re dreaming, while you are dreaming. What most people don’t realise that the dream world seems every bit as real and as vivid as waking life, but without any of the troublesome limitations of the physical plane. All the five senses are stimulated and anything and everything is possible, and once you gain lucidity you have absolute power to shape every little detail of the experience; with God-like abilities to create, do, change and destroy whatever (or whoever!?) you like. If you’ve seen ‘The Matrix’ movies, it’s very much like the ‘construct‘.

The first step in learning the art of lucid dreaming is to develop sufficient dream recall to enable you to remember your dreams when you awaken. Stephen LaBerge, a Stanford University professor and one of the leading figures in lucid Dreaming research advises keeping a “Dream Journal”, where you jot down a few notes when you first wake up regarding the content of your dreams from the night. When I tried this exercise, I found at first I remembered very little about my dreams, but over time I gained much greater recall of my nightly adventures and eventually started remembering multiple dreams from different sleep phases in the night; and once you reach this point, the fun part starts – learning to Lucid Dream.

My Experience with Landmark Education

22 08 2007

Between April and September of 2006 I was more or less continuously involved in some capacity with Landmark Education, now, almost a year later I thought I’d take a moment to reflect on my experiences with them.

The core Landmark course, The Landmark Forum, is one of those things that most people have heard about in some capacity before, I’d heard of a number of people doing it in the past, but hadn’t expressed too much interest until almost simultaneously two friends of mine contacted me saying they’d had an amazing experience on the course, and that I should have a look at doing it myself.

I had a look at Landmark’s website, and found the information a little sparse, there was a lot of positive stuff about the benefits of their courses, but very little about what the course actually involved. But spurred by my friends’ enthusiasm for the courses, I went on to do a little research and while doing so read stories of life-changing breakthroughs, and then right through the entire spectrum of experience to stories of people experiencing mental breakdowns, to claims of unusual experiences and cultish behaviour. Nevertheless, I decided to sign up for the course, and see what all the fuss was about.

Where to from here?

7 08 2007

I watched Steve Jobs’ Stanford Commencement Speech (above), and heard this fantastic quote:

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” - Steve Jobs

It got me thinking.

Despite the fact that largely I am very happy with my life, in some ways, I still ultimately feel I am stagnating. I’m not sure if I have an undiagnosed case of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), or I am just restless; but I struggle to spend too much time in one place, doing one thing. Maybe that’s why I love to travel, and maybe why I am constantly searching for new experiences, learning new things, and exploring new ideas. Even in my career, working as a contractor, never too long in one place, always on the move, new people and new places every few months.

Having more or less fallen in to my current Technical Support career path due to my inability at high school to commit to anything else, I feel the time has come for a change. Perhaps drastic change.

Paris (July 07)

30 07 2007

Mona LisaSnails; frogs legs; coffee and croissants in street side cafés – Paris proved to be a very cool city in which to spend a weekend. Having a day off work to use, I opted to take a three day weekend and caught the EuroStar across to Paris. I’ve had a visit to Paris before, albeit very briefly, back in 2005 when a friend of mine managed to score two VIP passes to the opening of Space Mountain 2 at EuroDisney, however other than the inside of the theme park I never saw much of anything, so I was really looking forward to spending a little more time there and truly explore the city.

The first thing I noticed about Paris, is everything looks exactly the way you would expect it to, unlike London, most development in recent years has been on the outskirts of the city, leaving most of the inner city unchanged for decades, if not centuries. All the streets are lined with quaint Parisian homes, with their ornate little window grills the French seem to love so dearly; cramped little cafes dotted all over the place, full of dour looking Parisians; and much to my delight, stalls selling Nutella crepes at every turn.

IRB Rugby Sevens

29 05 2007
Chris, Sash, Me, Nathan, Steve

Rugby Sevens crew (L to R): Chris, Sash, Me, Nathan, Steve

Take one international sports event, add six dashing young men in costumes, a lot of drinking, and what you have is a recipe for total madness.

Sunday was the IRB Rugby Sevens, my esteemed associates and I donned various costumes and headed along. Our crew consisted of a Priest, a Convict, a Pig, Shrek, and Elvis representing all that is good and true about New Zealand. My claim to fame is that I, dressed as Elvis, was approached by the BBC to do a spot on TV, so the commentator did his lines, then they cut to me singing “It’s now or never” (classic Elvis), also Chris (the Priest), and I were on the big screen at the match, which also happened to be televised across our great land. New Zealand also won the event, go team.

Easily the funniest day ever, and we had people coming to take photos with us all over the place – I feel like a bonafide celebrity, heh. Got some great photos, check out the link:

London Marathon & An Update (April 2007)

23 04 2007

Supporting The Marathon Runners

"Supporting" The Marathon Runners

The London Marathon was yesterday; today I am sore, bruised and have little cuts all over my feet and hands. This would be fine if I had actually been participating in the marathon, unfortunately however, my injuries were sustained during a rather chaotic water fight with some local kids in our driveway in the late afternoon.

The London Marathon goes right past my flat, so some friends and I set up shop in the backyard with water guns and buckets of water and blasted the unsuspecting runners as they went past, it’s probably the only time you can spray innocent unsuspecting people with water and have them be thankful for it. Out of the 35,000 odd people who went past our place, only three or four people seemed to take offence, some one threw half a banana which managed to hit me in the side of the head, someone spat at us (thankfully they missed), and we had a few empty bottles lobbed over the wall, but mostly people appreciated we were doing our part to make London a better place!
